Examiner Office

Before the advent of the newspaper, news items and notices in the port were placed in shop windows. In 1851 Richard Osburne began Warrnambool’s first newspaper, the ‘Examiner’. Later that year he left for the goldfields but returned to Warrnambool in 1853. On his return he continued to publish The ‘Examiner’ which initially was issued once a week but later came out twice weekly. The ‘Examiner’ was eventually replaced by the ‘Warrnambool Standard’ which was first published in 1872, but the Examiner was irregularly issued until 1880. The printing presses in the Examiner Office came from the Warrnambool region and date from 1886 to 1920. The Albion Hand Press (on right as you enter) was used to print Coleraine’s newspaper.
