1887 Surprise, Warrnambool Garrison Artillery (7min)
11.10am, 2.10pm & 4.10pm
In Easter 1887, after a previous year’s embarrassment where Warrnambool was left undefended and easily “captured” during military exercises, the local garrison vowed to be fully prepared. Guards were doubled and strict vigilance ordered.
But late one Saturday night, a sleeping sentry allowed pranksters to sneak in and fire a gun, sparking panic across the town as residents feared a Russian invasion.
The incident quickly became the talk of the colony, with newspapers mocking the garrison—turning a moment of military pride into one of Warrnambool’s most memorable and amusing historical mishaps.
1887 Surprise is an in-house production featuring numerous Flagstaff Hill staff and volunteers.
