School Holidays

Due to the closure of Flagstaff Hill, the regular School Holiday Program will not be running. However, we have decided to bring the Autumn Adventures School Holiday Program to you with a downloadable activities book (available shortly), full of fun things to make and do.

Flagstaff Hill at home these school holidays

Families who planned to spend their Easter school holidays at Flagstaff Hill need not despair upon news that the Maritime Museum and Village are temporarily closing, due to social distancing measures.

Flagstaff Hill’s school holiday program ‘Autumn Adventures’ will be made available online. An Autumn Adventures Activity Book full of fun family activities can be downloaded from the Flagstaff Hill website or their social media channels.

The free resource will have many of the same activities planned for the holiday program, adapted for families to do together at home. Activities including easter craft templates and ideas, old fashioned games, cooking recipes, sea shanty karaoke, educational activities for all ages, and there’s even a historic reenactment script for kids to get into character.

On Easter Sunday Flagstaff Hill asks that families share photos and videos of their craft creations to join a virtual Easter Bonnet Parade. Video tutorials for the activities featuring the Jolly Lighthouse Keeper and other Flagstaff Hill characters will also be available on the Flagstaff Hill’s social media channels and website.

Flagstaff Hill Service Manager, Paul Pinkerton, said that

‘We are sadly disappointed that we had to cancel the regular school holiday programing and we’re currently working through what future programs will look like. The important thing is that we will see you back on the hill in the following months and for future school holiday programs.’

The cancellation of Easter Sundays’ Day on the Hill event will mean greater celebrations at Flagstaff Hill when circumstances improve, Mr Pinkerton said

‘Stay tuned for important announcements regarding our other iconic event New Years Eve on the Hill’.

Bethany Lewis, Destination Marketing Co-ordinator for Warrnambool City Council, said

‘Like everyone we’re in uncharted waters so this initiative is a Flagstaff Hill first. We hope parents download the activities, share the videos with their kids and enjoy what has been carefully curated for them.’

Flagstaff Hill will continue to trail new technologies during the temporary closure, Ms Lewis said,

‘We plan to offer virtual tours to school groups and live stream sessions. Staff will still be answering phones and emails, so we will continue to listen to the public's feedback and adapt our digital services accordingly.’

Follow Flagstaff Hill on facebook and instagram to watch these new services roll out.

Flagstaff Hill Closed to help stop the spread of Covid 19

To help stop the spread of COVID-19, Flagstaff Hill will be closed to the public from 5pm, March 20.

We are among the busiest Council sites in terms of people, many of whom are visitors to our city – both international and domestic.

We also have large numbers of volunteers, many of them older members of our community and potentially more vulnerable to the impact of COVID-19.

Our School Holiday Program has also been cancelled but we are offering an online School Holiday Program for families to download here and do at home.

You can still reach our staff by calling 03 5559 4600 or emailing flagstaffhill [at] warrnambool [dot] vic [dot] gov [dot] au
